‘Gut Soothing’ Bone Broth Recipe

All disease begins in the gut” - Hippocrates

Bone Broth hosts a myriad of health benefits for us AND our dogs. This simple yet miraculous elixir is an excellent source of naturally occurring; Glucosamine, Amino Acids, Collagen, Glycine. It also aids in digestion and promotes healing. Bone Broth is great for many things but especially Joint Health, it also supports Gut Health, and provides Immune System support.

An Important note to make about Bone Broth is that while it has numerous health benefits, the sourcing of your number one ingredient: Bones, is very important. Studies now show that carcinogens like Glyphosates (aka round-up) that chickens, and some cattle eat in high amounts through their diets, collects in the bone marrow (Dr. Gary Richter) - (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2809416/). When securing your bones for bone broth, look for ones that were from animals fed organic, non GMO diets. Organic can be expensive, and if you’re on a strict budget it may not be feasible for you use solely organic ingredients, but prioritize bones if you can. What happens when you cook the bones in water is that you essentially create a glyphosate stew for your pup.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Bones (Beef, Turkey, or Chicken with lots of cartilage - feet, necks, wings)

  • Rosemary (fresh is best)

  • Turmeric (Root is preferred, but you can use dry powder)

  • Ginger Root

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (Skip if your dog is yeasty)

  • Chamomile Tea Bags (Make sure the tea only has chamomile in it)

  • Lion’s Mane Mushrooms and/or Shiitake (can also add King Trumpet, and White Button)

  • Kale

  • Mint (Fresh)

  • Turnips

Your Bones should not have a lot of meat on them, I like to get soup bones or chicken/turkey carcasses from Farmer’s Markets. If they do have meat, you will need to cook and remove the majority of the meat from the bones before simmering for bone broth - I even use the same water to simmer for a couple of hours, than remove the bones, remove the meat, and add the bone back to the broth, add an extra hour of simmer time for this method.

Tools:

  • Stove Top

  • Stockpot

  • Ladel (not needed - but will make your life easier)

  • Mason Jars or Ice Cube Trays

Directions (recipe for about 1 gallon) :

  1. Fill your stockpot with water and bring to a simmer, add in your bones and cover.

  2. Chop your veggies, mushrooms and herbs and add them to the pot (about 3 handfuls of green veg, 3-4 handfuls of mushrooms, 2 sprigs of Rosemary removed from stem, 1 Sprig of Mint chopped, 2-3 tablespoons of Turmeric, 2 Tablespoons of Ginger, 2-3 Sliced Turnips.

  3. Cut open your Chamomile Tea bags (about 2) add them to the pot.

  4. Add 2-3 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar

  5. Allow to simmer, covered for 3 hours.

  6. After 3 hours, add an additional 1 tablespoon of Turmeric, 1 Tablespoon of Ginger, 1 Sprig of Rosemary (removed from stem), and another emptied bag of Chamomile tea leaves.

  7. Cover again and allow to simmer for another 1-1.5 hours.

  8. Remove from stove top and allow pot to cool, place in fridge once no longer hot.

  9. After Bone Broth has cooled in the fridge for a few hours, remove the fat that has collected on the top (throw away), and portion some out into jars or ice cube trays to freeze for longer use.

  10. Bone Broth kept in the fridge will only keep for about 5 days.

  11. SERVE, you and your dogs can BOTH enjoy the benefits!
