Richmond Dog Trainer / Fairfax Virginia Dog Trainer

Hi, I’m autumn somers.

Autumn has been working in the pet world for nearly a decade, as a trainer and behavioral consultant of 8 years, and in the pet food industry. She is passionate about the overall wellness of dogs and cats and has been studying Canine and Feline nutrition for the past 9 years. Autumn has had the wonderful opportunity to study under Integrative Veterinarians and has been through accredited programs including; The College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. Her years of experience in the Pet Food Industry gives her unique insight into the inner workings of the business and the processes of Dog Food manufacturing, and regulations and she shares these years of experience and knowledge with you in order to better the health and behavior of your beloved companions. Autumn originally went through through Karen Pryor’s Academy of Positive Dog training and has since expanded her offerings to include Balanced Training in order to create a personalized experience to fit the needs of each dog and their owners. Autumn has also studied under, shadowed, and taken courses from many pillars in the behavioral community including; Kim Brophey (Applied Ethologist, CPDT-KA, CDBC) through her course, as well as Will Atherton (Canine Behaviorist, and Law Enforcement Canine Training Consultant in the UK). She brings Cynology and Applied Ethology approaches to Dog Training to help you better understand your companion on their cognitive level. Her courses are extremely in-depth and hands on, taking multidimensional assessments to teach you the root of your dogs behavior and help you live a more synergistic and obedient life with your pet based on respect and trust. Autumn is a sponge in the pet community, and spends countless hours dedicating her time to continuing education, and staying up to date on new science and evolving technique.

“My dream, was to create an informative pet service, in order to bring education and science back to the pet industry. I created A Balanced Canine (Formerly It’s a Breeze Pet Services) over 7 years ago to share my knowledge and passion with others who are looking to have a deeper connection and understanding of their pets. In order to form a strong bond and have a truly obedient pet we have to understand them on their cognitive level, not ours. I do not believe in ‘band aid’ fixes, but rather in finding the root of the problem and helping you resolve it at the source. I will work closely with you and your pet, to help you understand the science behind your pets behavior, and the impact nutrition can have on not only their health but also their behavior.”

I offer numerous services to benefit you and your companion, scroll down to learn more!

our Approach

Autumn offers Balanced dog training with a focus on Cynology or “dog psychology”, and Applied Ethology to help you better understand your pet and live together symbiotically. What this means, is that we completely tailor your dogs training program to meet THEIR specific needs. We incorporate positive reinforcement to encourage wanted behaviors and teach you how to safely and humanely correct and discourage unwanted behavioral patterns. The combination of these two methods allows us to completely tailor your dogs training program to their exact needs. No two dogs are alike and their training plan should reflect that.

Our programs are uniquely tailored to fit the needs of each dog and family, we combine positive reinforcement methods, and the use of prong collars, slip-leads, e-collars (not shock collars), and other tools to teach you how to safely and humanely discourage undesirable or dangerous behaviors. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have on our methods and discuss what may or may not apply to your dog.

We also know that based on the biology of Canines and Felines they have very different and specific diet requirements. In order to not only maintain your pets health, but allow them to thrive, they need a biologically appropriate diet. In this day and age there is countless options, companies, and stores to choose from, it can become very overwhelming quickly! Autumn has had the wonderful opportunity to work closely with pet supply stores from mom & pop shops to large box stores, taking meetings with dog and cat food manufacturers and even touring facilities! This has allowed her to examine pet food companies and their ingredient panels up close and personal! Diet is the FOUNDATION of your pets health, it can effect anything from attention span and behavior to serious health conditions. “I want to share my knowledge with you to set you and your pet up for success!”
