Healthy Smoothie Blend to share with your dog!

“It is health that is real wealth…” - Mahatma Gandhi

Dogs and Cats are the only living beings that we are told should be fed a dry, highly processed diet for the entirety of their lives. We know for our own health that whole foods are the healthiest, life-sustaining and nutritionally dense foods we can consume. In Zoo’s, animals are fed platters of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats and fish. Yet since the 1950s it’s become the societal norm to feed our dogs and cats dry, highly rendered brown pellets for the duration of their lives, not only have we been told it’s okay, we have been told it’s the healthiest option for them…

Although times are changing and many pet owners are interested in learning to feed their pets fresh food diets, many owners are too scared to include fresh foods in their pets diets because they are unaware which are safe and healthy for their pets. If you are not ready to make the switch to an entirely fresh food diet, but want to bolster your pets bowl and add healthy additions to their bowls, it does not have to be complicated. One of the easiest ways you can improve your pets health is by simply adding safe foods to their bowls from your own grocery shopping. Below I have provided my base Smoothie recipe that I use and modify daily for myself, that can benefit your dog too! Cats are obligate carnivores and as such, should only be fed meats. This recipe is not only safe for both you AND your dog, it’s a nutrient powerhouse and packed full of free-radical fighting antioxidants, healthy fats, functional hydration and gut-microbe loving prebiotics!

While you might drink a 16oz glass, your dogs would benefit from a smaller portion of this blend. 1tsp - 4oz per serving depending on the size of your dog. Always start on the lower end, too much soluble fiber at once can cause loose stool temporarily. I do not typically measure when making this smoothie, everyone has a different preference on consistency so play around with the recipe below to your liking!

Basic Powerhouse Smoothie Recipe:

Coconut Water

Aloe Vera Juice

Decaf Green Tea

Spinach (can sub for Bok Choy for a lower purine, low oxalate option as needed)

Kale

Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries & Raspberries (I use a frozen organic mix from Trader Joe’s)

Pineapple

About 1 tbsp Chia Seeds

About 1 tbsp Pumpkin Seeds

Ginger (about 1 thumb-sized piece)

Optional Add: Manuka Honey (will sweeten the smoothie and has antibacterial and immune boosting properties)
